Art and Music’s Effect on Health

Published by jober at 9:12 pm under Uncategorized Edit This

Studies have shown that creative expression can contribute to good health.  Things that give a sense of achievement or self worth can improve the immune system and help keep us free of disease.  Avenues of expression such as painting, sculpting, writing, music, decorating, or landscaping helps us draw upon that core of vitality within.  They also relieve stress and help us to relax.

In an Alzheimers study, University of Kentucky Prof. David Snowdon tracked the health of 678 Catholic nuns over the age of 70.  He asked one nun who had taken up ceramic sculpting at the age of 97 to join the study.  This lady did not feel old and promptly told Snowdon that she was too busy with her art to take part in a study of old people.  She enjoyed a meaningful life and lived to the age of 107.

As much as healthcare professionals preach exercise and a healthful diet, it seems that peace and creativity may be very important too.    Take a few minutes each day or a day off each week to rest, reflect, and allow your creativity to flow.
