Why Flossing is Important
Good dental care is not just for a clean mouth. It is important to overall health. According to the dentalhealthsite.com only 12% of the population flosses. It seems that most Americans believe brushing is enough. But the truth is that brushing alone does not reach between teeth to get the food particles and tartar trapped there. The tartar hardens into plaque that can only be removed at the dentist’s office.
Infection, which is gingivitis or, more seriously, periodontal disease, not only causes tooth and bone loss but can travel through the bloodstream and affect vital organs of the body, especially the heart.
Several studies have shown that periodontal disease is linked with an increased risk of heart attack and stroke.
Part of a heart healthy lifestyle should include daily brushing and flossing, along with yearly or twice yearly visits to the dentist.
